DEBATE: GANADORES POR SEGUNDA VEZ

Debate at Colegio San Ignacio de Recalde on August 24th, 2006

Our last debate took place at Colegio San Ignacio de Recalde, last Thursday, August 24th. It was a very important day for us because this was the day we had eagerly prepared for. The students, Álvaro, Higa, Pablo Matos, Alejandro Albretch, Marjorie Luque, and Jimena Arribasplata from IV High, as well as Juan Carlos Franco from V High and I met for about an hour to take care of the last details of our debate. The motion for this debate was: “boyfriends/girlfriends are a waste of time”, and we had been told we were to be the proposition team, twenty four hours before then. The students commented me that they had met with some teachers and psychologists from Abraham Lincoln, and that their advice had been rather helpful in the making and structuring of their arguments. We had a total of 6 students divided in two teams: one to debate in English: Marjorie, Jimena, and  Juan Carlos, and the other to debate in Spanish: Álvaro, Pablo, and Alejandro (the Spanish one was the result of a last minute decision due to the unavailability of an extra team to debate against us in English).  Amongst the school that attended this debate we found: Colegio Markham, Colegio Newton, Colegio Leonardo Da Vinci, Colegio Santa María, Colegio Roosevelt, and Colegio San Ignacio de Recalde. The moment of the debates started, and we took our positions in the classroom we were assigned. Our Spanish team was to debate against Colegio Santa María, and our English one against Colegio San Ignacio de Recalde. Our Spanish one lost to Santa María, but our English one won the debate against San Ignacio de Recalde. The debates were full of confrontation, debating techniques, and excellent arguments. The respect between the two teams was something that could not be left unnoticed, and the members of both teams showed very high level of maturity and calmness. Our students, particularly, showed lots of confidence and knowledge. All these elements, amongst many others, are what we look for when debating. Some of our members were congratulated on for the excellence of their plans and examples to clarify their arguments.

We are now preparing for the next debate which will take place at Colegio Leonardo Da Vinci on September 14th, and whose motion will be “cats rule and dogs drool” –Any ideas on what this metaphor means? As per the positions, we won’t know whether we will be proposition or opposition until the day before this debate. GOOD LUCK GUYS!
