International Baccalaurate

Authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization, since April 2011, our school offers the Primary Years Programme (PYP) to Preschool and Elementary students (Nursery – Grade 5); the curriculum is developed in English and Spanish in each of the grade levels; this task is in charge of highly qualified bilingual teachers who recieve permanently official IB training.

According to the principles of the International Baccalaureate Organization “the main objective of the PYP is to develop international minded people who recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world”. Thus, the PYP curriculum is based on structured inquiry for learners in the 3 – 12 age range focused on the student’s integral development and in a general concept of how to develop international mindedness.

The PYP looks for a balance among the acquisition of skills, essential knowledge, the development of conceptual understanding, the demonstration of positive attitudes, and the decision to act responsibly.

In order to achieve this balance, a special emphasis is given to the five essential elements of the written curriculum: knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes and action; that are developed through the inquiry of significant issues within the context of the units of inquiry, each one of which tackles a central idea relevant to a specific transdisciplinary theme in order to have meaningful and long-lasting learning.

In fifth grade, the students culminate the program with a project named Exhibition, which is an opportunity to work collaboratively in order to investigate a local issue with a global relevance, applying their understanding of the PYP essential elements as a result of an enduring learning experience.
